The Schoolhouse - Little Harbour School

The Schoolhouse, measuring 19' x 31', was originally located in Little Harbour and built between 1949 and 1950. It is typical of schools built during this period. It was first used for teaching grades primary to eleven and then, as consolidation was adopted by the School Board, higher grades attended a regional high school. A number of teachers who taught in the school, as well as many pupils, still live in the area and their recollections were extremely helpful in restoring the building and its furnishings to the 1950 period. Behind the school is a replica of a two-seater outhouse - a feature well remembered by former students! The school was used until 1962 when a central elementary school was built in nearby Owl's Head and students were bused to the new school from surrounding communities.

From its founding, the school was also used as a Community Hall and Catholic Church and students would receive religious instruction every Friday afternoon. Following the closing of the school, the building was somewhat modified and continued to be used by the community fora number of years. Eventually it was sold for use as a summer camp before being acquired by the Heritage Society in 1999.

The various uses to which the school building had been put over the years had altered the building significantly, but enough of its original structure remained for it to be accurately restored. The Heritage Societyis actively seeking furnishings and teaching materials associated withthe school.
